THE CHALLENGE
Chronic wounds are a silent epidemic in American healthcare. A one-centimeter diabetic ulcer may seem small, but it can quickly become life-threatening, limb-threatening, and financially devastating. Patients endure repeated hospital visits, painful procedures, and, in far too many cases, the threat of amputation. Families struggle to cover out-of-pocket costs, while providers are often left with limited options.
The human toll is staggering. The mortality rate for patients with diabetic foot ulcers can exceed that of several cancers, including prostate and breast cancer (Armstrong et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 2017). As diabetes prevalence continues to rise — projected to affect nearly 700 million people globally by 2045 (International Diabetes Federation, 2021) — the burden of chronic wounds will grow in parallel.
For patients, it is not just about survival but quality of life. As one physician explained: “It really dramatically affects a patient’s quality of life and costs our healthcare system a tremendous amount of money.”
