Comprehensive Review Summarizes Clinical and Economic Benefits of CAMPs for Chronic and Hard-to-Heal Wound Care

September 15, 2025 -- The Diabetic Wound Awareness PAC (DWA) today released a research brief on the proven efficacy of Cellular, Acellular, and Matrix-like Products (CAMPs) in treating chronic wounds. The review underscores the significant benefits of CAMPs in improving wound closure rates, reducing recurrence and mortality, and providing cost-effective treatment for patients suffering from chronic wounds.

Chronic wounds, which affect 16.4% of individuals enrolled in Medicare, pose a significant healthcare challenge, particularly among seniors, people living in nursing facilities and other long term care facilities, homebound populations, veterans, and those with diabetes. The underlying conditions contributing to chronic wound prevalence, such as diabetes and vascular disease, are on the rise and are expected to lead to increased Medicare spending.

The evidence review reveals that CAMPs have emerged as a highly effective treatment for chronic wounds, with meta-analyses of clinical trials demonstrating a 55-72% increase in wound closure rates compared to standard care. Real-world evidence from Medicare claims data shows that CAMPs reduce wound recurrence by 80-91% and one-year mortality by 23-26%. Furthermore, CAMPs provide cost-effective treatment for patients suffering from chronic wounds by preventing expensive complications, emergency visits, and hospitalizations.

The DWA PAC is committed to raising awareness about the efficacy and value of CAMPs as a life-saving and life-changing product in wound care management and treatment, especially for the millions of Americans with diabetes. Preserving patient access to CAMPs and ensuring that the critical products are available and accessible for patients in all settings of care is critical for improving outcomes, reducing the overall burden of chronic wounds, and reducing long-term healthcare costs on our nation’s healthcare system.
